Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is used to address Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). OMDs are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth.
OMDs can include one or a combination of the following:
OMDs can impact breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and development, alignment of the teeth, chewing, swallowing, speech, temporomandibular movement, oral hygiene, stabilization of the teeth during and/or after orthodontic treatment, facial esthetics, and more.

OMDs can include one or a combination of the following:
- Thumb and finger sucking habits
- A routine habit of resting with the lips apart
- A forward resting posture of the tongue between or against the teeth
- Tongue Thrust
- Clenching or grinding of the teeth
- Other harmful oral habits
