Ashley Perkins, M.S., L-SLP, CCC-SLP, COM® earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 2021, she became an IAOM Board Certified Orofacial Myologist through the International Association of Orofacial Myology. From August 2021 to May 2022, she served as a Vermont Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (VT LEND) Speech-Language Pathology Fellow through the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. VT LEND trains leaders in maternal and child health with a focus on neurodevelopmental disabilities and prepares professionals across the health and education professions to serve children with special health needs and their families. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Education and Leadership with a concentration in Organizational Leadership at Rockhurst University (Class of 2026).
Ashley is licensed by the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (LBESPA) and by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). She also holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She has worked in multiple long-term care facilities, home health settings for adults, home health for pediatrics, early intervention, and private practice, and she treats individuals across the lifespan from infancy to geriatrics. Ashley’s passion for oral function and feeding deficits impacting speech began in 2015, the same year she graduated with her master’s degree and became a new mom. Her first child experienced breastfeeding challenges and slow weight gain. Over time, additional concerns included drooling, an open mouth resting posture, oral motor issues, airway concerns, teeth grinding, a lisp, a limited variety of foods, and sensory issues impacting feeding. At the same time, Ashley was working in the nursing home setting, where she often questioned issues she observed with mouth breathing, drooling, snoring, chewing, swallowing, and speech. She also noted how poor feeding endurance and energy conservation issues in adults impacted their ability to eat safely and effectively. She felt like she did not yet have answers to the questions she was asking, but she knew the issues were all connected. She began to recognize that these challenges were not isolated, but were factors impacting progression across a variety of areas, including speech. In 2017, with her second child, Ashley once again encountered feeding challenges. Her child faced torticollis, breastfeeding difficulties, tongue tie, oral motor issues, breathing coordination issues, bottle feeding challenges, chewing concerns, swallowing food whole, safety concerns during meals, and sensory issues impacting feeding. Experiencing these challenges both personally and professionally gave Ashley valuable perspective and fueled her commitment to creating solutions for her community, with a focus on feeding and myofunctional concerns that impact speech. She is a lover of preventative services and early intervention, believing that through education we can help empower our community to recognize concerns earlier and take steps that support long-term growth and development while supporting the family and the overall well-being of the child. Ashley founded Perkins Therapy Group in 2016 after recognizing the need for local specialized feeding and orofacial myofunctional therapy services in her community, as well as the need for workplace flexibility to support her own family and, over time, other speech-language pathologists and their families. In 2019, she opened a brick-and-mortar private practice and transitioned to full-time work, expanding services for her community while maintaining the flexibility to be present for her family. In 2022, she relocated to League City, Texas, and continues to manage Perkins Therapy Group remotely, overseeing administrative tasks, communications, and behind the scenes operations. Ashley is a mother of two and enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, continuing education, improving home and business processes, and cooking. Her professional interests include feeding, orofacial myofunctional disorders, neurodiversity, ADHD, dyslexia, gifted and talented, asynchronous development, twice-exceptionality, accommodations, workplace flexibility, workforce improvement, school and workplace accommodations, organizational behavior, and resourcefulness. |
